Here’s a report from CarInsurance.com about the refusal of insurers to take 17-year-old drivers
TWO-thirds of car insurers are refusing to take on 17-year-old drivers, a move which will put pressure on the Government to raise the legal driving age to 18.
Even under-21s will find it a struggle to obtain cover as around half of insurers are refusing to issue them with policies.
Among other moves being backed by insurance giants are calls by safety groups to introduce night-time curfews and a complete alcohol driving ban for newly-qualified drivers. It is believed by refusing to offer cover, insurance companies are hoping to force the government to raise the driving age limit.
In February, MPs on the Transport Select Committee called for a 12-month learning period for all drivers, a minimum age of 18 for a full licence, and a tougher test with more hazard training.
